Step One
The most important step of using a boresnake is to make sure and guarantee the firearm you are about to clean using this product is unloaded.
For a pistol, you need to remove the magazine if it is a semi-automatic pistol. You need to lock the slide back or cycle the slide multiple times to guarantee no round is in the chamber. This also applies for rimfire, magazine fed semi-automatic pistols.
If this is a revolver, you need to open the cylinder and eject everything out of the cylinder.
Now place the magazine and all loose ammunition to the side to guarantee no live ammunition can be loaded during cleaning.
For a rifle, you need to remove the magazine if it is magazine fed and like the instructions above with a semi-automatic pistol- cycle the bolt multiple times after removing the magazine to guarantee no round is in the chamber. For a bolt action rifle, just open the bolt and inspect with your finger. You can use a small light, a bore light or a bore laser.
For a shotgun, you need to cycle all the ammunition out of the tube fed magazine. Similarly you need to do the same for a tube fed, rimfire rifle such as 22LR. Confirm no ammunition is in the chamber of your shotgun or rimfire rifle.
